Installing fonts on a PC

Under Windows 7 simply double click on the font file itself to install it. A preview window opens, at the top of which is a button to install the font. Alternatively drag and drop the font to this directory: C:\Windows\Fonts. After a recommended reboot the font will be available to all applications.

For older Windows operating systems, if you're using a third party font management utility like FontAgent Pro, Suitcase, Master Juggler, or our absolute favorite, the free Linotype FontExplorer we recommend you follow their instructions.

If for some reason you can not use one of the above products it is a relatively easy procedure to install fonts under the Microsoft Windows operating system if you follow these seven steps.
After downloading the font make sure to unzip the files.

Click on your Start button and select the Control Panel. In Windows versions older than Windows XP click on your Start button and then chose Settings > Control Panel.

In the Control Panel open the Fonts folder by double-clicking it. You should now be able to view all the fonts installed on your PC.

Select from the File menu (Alt-F) the menu item Install New Font or Add Fonts.

In case the Install New Font option is not selectable this can be fixed in the MS-DOS mode. If you don't feel comfortable doing this now would probably be a good time to consult with a technician. Otherwise go to the C:\windows or c:\winnt directory and type attrib +s fonts and hit enter. Once you arrive back at the C:\ prompt again press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot the computer. The Install New Font option should be available now.

Locate the folder containing the font you want to install and select it. To select more than one font, hold down the CTRL key and click on each font.

Make sure the Copy fonts to the Fonts folder box is checked. Instead of installing the font this will cause Windows to install a copy of the Font. That way you still have the original which you should store in a safe location for future use.

Note: If you are going to install fonts from a removable storage medium like a floppy disk or a CD-ROM, be sure the Copy fonts to the Fonts folder box is checked; Otherwise, the fonts will not be available to use once the CD is ejected.

Confirm by clicking the OK button. This completes your OpenType font installation.

If you try to install fonts which are already installed, you will be presented with a warning dialog telling you that you cannot install the font unless you first un-install it. Simply click the OK button there.

OpenType has been around for a while but just to be on the safe side, make sure your PC actually supports it.
