Martin Wenzel's latest creation is not only a whopper of a type family but it is quite clever too. Each font contains two sets of alternative, stylistic letterforms. Martin calls them Humanist and Grotesk. The two distinct and familiar flavors of typographic tradition are integrated into a single font by adding a number of alternate glyphs.
German design magazine Slanted has a nice write up about our new super family Realist.

→ Last weekend I was invited to teach a workshop called Understanding and Experiencing the Designspace, at the Cooper Union's certificate program Type@Cooper. The students were an inspiration, and the Cooper Union is still simply one of the most gratifying places to teach. Check out the pictures after the jump...
Here is to a great Type@Cooper workshop!

On the weekend of January 29-30 as New York was buried in sunshine and snow, we spent two full days with markers and paper exploring the design space. We examined roman and italic construction principles and the expansion and translation contrasts, as well as different amounts of contrast, ranging from that of a typical titling face to a sans serif. While there was a lot of information to digest, in the end we were able to apply the weekend's lessons to the beginnings of an original design. In its nature Type@Cooper is a unique program in North America, targeted at helping designers who feel passionate about type to become professional typeface designers.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the students of the inaugural class in the Type@Cooper certificate program and to Cara di Edwardo, Jesse Ragan, Sasha Tochilovsky and David Greenstein for making it happen! I had great fun.

Thanks for coming, Hannes! The students spoke enthusiastically afterward about how beneficial the workshop was, and they came out of it with some great designs.
